Introduction

Brief Introduction

Let the info session drown us all

Hello Everyone! My name is Jasmine Pearce and I am a Microbial Pathogenesis major here at the University of Oklahoma. I'm going into my final semester of university, being my 5th year. My degree is now at this point a planned program degree due to some complications I had last semester, but I have primary focus on Microbiology (which is why if you look up my major name, it won't show up in the degree check-sheet directory.) I love conducting research about how different pathogens can enter the body and cause a shut down to different systems that we rely on. I don't love the "oh no I'm dying due to disease" part of it, but more of the "my body is a microbial army and it's gonna fight" kind of thing. I've taken classes like Infection Disease, Immunology, Microbial Physiology, Microbiology, even both engineering Physics and life science Physics; all of which have been extremely rewarding and very very very difficult to say the least. I love games, crafts, leisure walks around a brightly lit park because I'm too afraid of water for beaches and too out of shape to hike mountains (for now.) I have a dog, who I love dearly. He's half pug, half chihuahua, and fully bent on being spoiled and sassy.

He can not only be as photogenic as Kendall Jenner, but he also has his awkward moments...

He currently lives with my dad right now, but hopefully once I'm in living area that allows pets I can start waking up to a little bit of extra love each morning.

I am an African Asian American. Being mixed with both Japanese and African American has been a great cultural flow for me since I was young. I know enough Japanese to get me where I need to go if I ever make the trek up to Japan, but I don't know enough to feel confident in saying I'm fluent in the language or anything. I was also a military child so I moved around a good amount, making traveling as a future goal something I wasn't comfortable with for a while. It made me into someone that preferred being a home body if I was given the choice.

A great deal has taken place in my life over the past year, and though I am a young adult I know I still have much more development in my future to shape myself in the person I'm supposed to be. Thank you for your read and I can't wait to learn more about my fellow course mates this semester!

  1. Being able to make your own major is so cool, Jasmine: "Microbial Pathogenesis" is definitely something new to me. (I was a Polish major in college, the ONLY Polish major at my school, which was pretty cool: when you go to a big school, it's nice to have a unique major!)

And your dog is such a cutie: that picture with the pinecones positively wants to be made into a meme! Easy to do at Cheezburger ha ha; that's what I use, and there are lots of other meme makers too of course.

It sounds like this class can be a chance to explore Japanese and African-American storytelling traditions too; you'll find them both in the UnTextbook when you start browsing around next week for that. One of my favorite online resources is this comic book series from Japan; gorgeous stuff, and some of the most famous folktales are included here: Hasegawa. Japanese Fairy Tale series. :-)

  2. Hi Jasmine!

Firstly, WHAT A CUTE DOGGO!!!! I adore pugs (my grandma had one when i was a kid), and I've never seen a pug-huaua before. He's disgustingly cute.

Second, I didn't even know we offered Microbial Pathogenesis, and I'm a Microbio senior this year. I'm very curious to know what your post-grad plans are, as I've been wading through a sea of options myself.

Also, your site design is really cool. Nice to meet you, and looking forward to reading your work!

  3. Hi!

Your major sounds incredible! I'm not really a "math and science" person, but I like the more esoteric perspective that you take: our bodies are microbial armies. I think of the human body as a little world, sentient and moving through an even larger world.

That is very cool that you speak Japanese. Our family is part Native American but we've lost a lot of our traditions and language. I think it's really cool that you keep in touch.

Good luck this semester, I can't wait to check out your writing!

PS. Your dog literally gives me life

  4. Hi Jasmine!
I definitely did not know that was a major we had here! I love learning about new majors and degrees at OU! I am not a science person but I love that you seem so passionate about what you are doing!
I adopted a dog 2 years ago from a shelter here in Norman and she is half weenie dog and half chihuahua (so they tell us). She is so spoiled and gets whatever her little heart desires. Thank you for posting pictures of your adorable dog!
I hope you have a great semester and good luck in your career!

  5. JASMINE AH!! I just read your comments on a couple of my blog posts and I didn't realize you were in this class too!! Your dog is ADORABLE by the way, what's his name? I'm sure you're excited this is your final semester of college and soon you'll be on your way to adulthood! In response to your comment on my Intro blog, Microbial Pathogenesis sounds super rad. I hope things are doing well, and I'll definitely get you details of my pet cafe when that happens. Have a great last semester!

  6. Jasmine, hi! Your dog is really cute! My family isn't military, but my husband is a horse trainer & we joke that we are like military families because we move so much due to his work. We've moved 28 times in 26 years! I'm torn between I want to stay home and never leave the house and I want to live out of a suitcase and travel all the time, most days.

Your major sounds really interesting, but definitely not something I could do. I'm just not a science/math person, unless you count accounting as math.

  7. Hey Jasmine, I wanna start out by saying that third picture of your pupper cracked me up! I was not ready for that at all! I honestly had not heard of you major until I read your post, but it sounds like a really cool field to study in, and I imagine there are plenty of jobs opportunities out there for you with that kind of knowledge. I wanted to do something in medicine, but didn't enjoy chemistry, so I applaud you! Hope you enjoy your semester!

  8. Hi Jasmine,
I was going to say something about how your major and academic interests sound cool but then I got distracted by your dog and especially distracted by the last picture. Although I'm a computer engineering major and know very little about microbiology, I still think your major sounds very interesting. I hope that your final semester goes well.

  9. Hi Jasmine! That is so crazy how much we have in common. On the book note, I wanted to reply that I fell in love with Agatha on accident when I read her book "and then there were none" thinking it was a modern book and then was surprised to see it was all in 1920's speak. At first I hated it, and put the book down a few times. But one day I read it and now I cannot get enough of her books, I'm trying to start my own collection too! So far I only have 4 or 5 so I have a long way to go with her 30+ publications lol. I had no clue Microbial Pathogenesis was a major but it sounds really cool! I have a hard time finding any other micro majors as it is. I'm a senior but not graduating till spring 2020 so I'll be a super senior also hah. I'm just now taking intro to micro and so excited to take all those classes you listed. That's also how I view microbiology, this teeny tiny warzone. If you are a book junkie, there is a book called Parasite Rex by Carl Zimmerman that goes into the relationship between a bunch of parasites and their host and it's very interesting if you don't get squeemish. I'm not big on travel myself, except for camping and exploring the natural forests around the states. I really hope to go to Yosemite one day - it's like a biological superstar to me. Have a fun last semester!

  10. Hi Jasmine, nice to “meet” you. Your major sounds super interesting! I am a chemical biosciences major, so I’ve taken a lot of the same classes you have. I am currently taking Pathogenic Microbiology and Infectious Disease and it has been one the most interesting and best classes I have taken at OU. Microorganisms themselves are very interesting, but pathogens take it to the next level.

  11. Hi Jasmine! Cool major! I’m currently taking Pathogenic Microbiology and I love the class! I also really love microbiology, but I’m a psychology major (I should have chosen Microbiology, but I’m a senior so I’ve gotten this far—hah). My parents were never in the military, but my older sister and brother are and I see how often they move around, so I can only imagine. I just learned not to really ask questions because once I did, they would change their plans. Thanks for sharing!

  12. Hey Jasmine! I love how you said "my body is a microbial army and it's gonna fight", because it puts a very story-like image on something that is a whole entire field of study. This class has really made me appreciate the idea of finding a story in everything, even in the real world, because by building a story, you get a better picture of how the setting, the characters, and the plot all evolve and interact with each other over time apart from the rest of the world or reality and it makes me feel more creative in finding solutions to problems.

  13. Hey Jasmine! I think its very cool how you get to make your own major. I have heard about the planned program major but was not clear about it but after reading your story I now have a more clearer perspective about it. I like how you are very passionate in what you are doing as well as knowledgeable about pathogens and other illnesses. I agree with you about the rigor of engineering physics and the other classes you listed but I am happy you were able to overcome them. Good luck to you in your classes this semester.

  14. Hi Jasmine! Holy S*** your major sounds super tough, but also very interesting to say the least! I know that I could never fully understand that so I'm always very impressed by people that go the full out science way. Looking forward to reading more of your writing this semester!

  15. Hi Jasmine! You should be seriously proud of tacking such a difficult major, I had to look up what it was to be clear! You seem very dedicated to it, which is awesome. Also, your dog. OH my goodness he is beyond cute, the third picture really got me. I am also quite impressed that you can manage even a little japanese, you have so much going on! Good luck finishing out your final year!

  16. Hello Jasmine!
You have such an interesting background, future, and dog. I am so happy that I randomly got sent to your page. I am very impressed with your major as well as your cultural understanding. It can be hard to grow up in America when you don't fit all the cultural stereotypes that people think you should and I am proud of you for stepping out and being who you are un-apologetically.

  17. Hey Jasmine. I think it's awesome that your major is something thats not even on the check sheet because it shows how unique it is. Your dog is also very cute and I loved the second picture of him. I think it's awesome that you got to experience two different cultures growing up because it gives you a different perspective about the smallest things.

  18. Hey Jasmine!
It is always amazing to me that I continue to learn new majors all the time. I am in my 5th year too and graduate in December but I took the much more conventional route and just a Communication major. I am sorry to hear that you had a tough time in the last year and hope your last semester is going great!

  19. Hi Jasmine! I love to hear it when people are passionate about their major and it sounds like you are very much! Microbial Pathogenesis does sound quite interesting, so I can see why you would be so into it. I also love the pictures of your dog, especially the last one! I think it’s really cool that you know some Japanese. I have actually taken a lot of Japanese courses here at the university myself. Anyway, I hope the rest of your semester goes well!

  21. Hi Jasmine! I loved reading about how passion for you major and why you love what you are doing! I have only had to take one science class here, so I agree with you that some of your classes sound very challenging! Your pictures of your dog are great! I really love small dogs. Good luck on the rest of your time in undergrad!

  22. Hey Jasmine!
I didn't even know your major was a thing but it sounded so interesting! It sounds very challenging. The dogs are super adorable. I have one at home but i don't get to see her very often that makes me sad. I also think it is cool that you know Japanese! I wanted to learn it but got really discouraged and did not want to do it... I hope you have a good last semester!

  23. Hello Jasmine!

I did not know that your major is Microbial Pathogenesis. I wish I would have done that. That actually sounds interesting. My microbiology class was very interesting and informative. I bet you have learned a lot about the bacteria and diseases around us. Your dod is very cute. I wish I could have a pet! Keep letting your light shine sis! You will do great !
